My name is Katherine Porter and I am a graduate of the Animal Behavior College’s Dog Training Program, which specializes in positive reinforcement techniques.
I grew up in Connecticut and played soccer throughout my childhood and college. I graduated from Marquette University with a Bachelors in Social Work in 2001. I spent 2 years volunteering in AmeriCorps programs in Nevada and Washington, DC. The volunteer work ranged from working with at-risk youth and advocacy on women's and children's issues. I pursued a Masters in Social Work from The Catholic University of America, graduating in 2006 with an MSW with a policy concentration and a Certificate in International Social Development. After completion of my MSW, I focused on advocating for disenfranchised people, particularly in the areas of migration and anti-trafficking efforts. I've also completed ABC's Diet and Nutrition Program and will be able to provide guidance on food requirements for optimal pet health.
In 2009, I married my husband, Edward, and we moved to Germany for his work in the Army. For the past few years, I've been searching for a career which blended my social work background with a portable career field.
While in Germany, we rescued a Jack Russell Terrier, Jack. He required rehabilitation and major behavior modification. With the help of a local trainer and my commitment to understanding his needs and where he is developmental, I was successful in training him with positive reinforcement techniques.
We then adopted a terrier mix, Bernie once we returned to the States. Once we arrived in El Paso, I began volunteering at the Humane Society and my desire to rehabilitate and to train dogs grew. I enrolled in and later graduated from Animal Behavior College (ABC) in 2013 with a Certificate in Dog Obedience Training. During my education with ABC, I was connected with Glenda Herrin of Heeling Hounds. Her approach and her commitment to positive reinforcement techniques and her outlook on maintaining the relationship between dog and caregiver was in line with my training values.
